Teacher Teaching may be considered to be a wayof helping people acquire
knowledge of different things ,and there areinnumerable subjects that are to be known . But the fundamentalteaching that Swami Vivekananda believed in was that every soul ispotentially perfect . Swami defined
education as the manifestation ofthe
perfection already in man.2 Every man is perfect , but he isnot aware of the perfection .What the teacher has to do is to make hispupil become aware of his inherent perfection . An ordinary teacherthinks of his pupils as boys whose minds are tabularasa (blank slates )on which he has to write what he deems fit . He feels that his pupilsare lumpsof clay for himto mould according to his liking . That os thecommon notion .But Swamiji held an altogether different view .He saysthat everychild has innate perfection and it is for the teacher fotpave the way for the
child to manifest theinnate perfection in him.That is the great toVedantic outlook that Swamiji adhered to and thiswas the fundamental principle of his teaching . Swamiji says :'We wantthat education by which character is formed , strenght of mind isincreased , the intellect is expanded , and by which one can stand onone's own feet .'3 He again says : 'Education is not the amount ofundigested ,all your life .'4 . This outlook makes everythng verydiffernt from the commonly accepted view ,that the child has to betaught everything by the teacher .Swamiji was not always conscios that he was a great teacher of man ,butwhereever he went he was a great teacher of man but wherever he went,people found a knowledge ,wisdom and light that comes from GODrealization .He spent his whole life teaching the ultimat e knowledge ,by knowing which everything becomes known ,by knowing which allproblems are solved.
