Book Review   by:GoriCosta     Original Author: Alberto Mendez

This abstract was translated from Los girasoles ciegos

A book consisting of four stories, established in the last year of the Spanish Civil War and the three years following this. The stories are held together by a very light thread. The first one, located in Madrid during the last days of the war, tell us about Captain Alegria, El Rendido, who fought on the National side and gave up to the Republicans when the French troops entered into the Spanish capital. Caught by the invadors or liberators, it is not my intention to be politic, he is considered a deserter, although he fought alongside his newcaptors during the war. The '40 years are illustrated by the elopment of a young coupel, the poet and she in love, toegether with their newly born son, through the mountains throughout this beautiful country. The loss of what up till today we have not been able to dream about. The third story tells us the story of a prisoner, who in order to save his life confesses to haveknown the son of the Colonel who is judging him, creating a life full of heroic deeds for a type who dedicated himself to two-timing and taking advantage of the victims of the war. The mother of the prisoner shows us a beautiful picture of love without boundaries. The last story, which is also the title of the book, tells us in an original way, from three points of view, a priest, the son of the hidden father and a third narrator, the story of a man who is hiding in a cupboard so as not to be found by the police. His son and his wife try to give him a life full of liberty within four walls. A pleasant and easy to read book which unveils to us a picture of the war from the side of the losers, showing us a more humane perspective.
