The shadow of the wind

Book Review by: Gori Costa

Original Author: Carlos Ruiz Zafon
This abstract was translated from La sombra del viento
These were the '40 years, in the antique zone of the Barcelona in the mid 90's. That's the way the story starts, with a young
character, Daniel Sempere, who is guided by his father to a halfhidden place and secluded by forgetfulness, 'The Graveyard of the Forgotten Books', where he discovers a book: The Shadow of the Wind , a cursed document as are all the documents written by his author - Julian Carax. From this discovery on, Daniel gets interested in the author as well as in his writings, which dissappeared in a mysterious way. It is in this way how the young barcelonean gets involved in a series of adventures and inquiries about this character, of his history, his past and his curse. The life of both characters, Daniel and Julian are narated with ambitious looseness, on the one hand the dark splendor of the beginning of the age, on the other hand the strange middream of the postwar, to end in the same story, their lives joining through a mysterious attraction.
