How To Read A Person Like A Book

Book Review by: Namratha

Original Authors: Gerald I. Nierenberg ; Henry H. Calero
We cannot make out what is really transpiring in the minds of the persons by mere exchange of verbal communications. On
many occasions words are uttered to hide, not to reveal. In this context a practical manual with detailed illustrations for acquiring the skills required to read the minds of the people, with whom we are dealing is more than welcome.
An airport is an excellent viewing spot for observing various types of people with different emotions. A little away from the departure area by observing three different persons in telephone booths, can we guess to whom they are talking? One may be salesman calling a prospective customer, the other may be talking to wife and another wooing the lover. Their stance and appearances shall definitely furnish certain clues. By observing television programmes involving discussions, without turning on the sound, we can practise to understand non-verbal communications. By turning on the sound between certain intervals of time we can check how far we are correct in reading the situations. Even though individual gestures are inputs for the purpose, it is not as simple as summing them up to get the complete picture. On any situation there may be a few gestures which suggest different meanings. Hence incongruent signals are to be eliminated or analyzed properly while arriving at a conclusion. We should study congruent gesture clusters along with verbal communication in order to comprehend the full meaning. There are different types of walking gestures which give clues about the state of mind of the person. The dejected walker may put his head down, hands in his pockets and move as if he is not aware where he is heading. The person who is bubbling with energy may move like a sprinter, hands on hips. The pre-occupied walker may clasp his hands behind and so on. Handshakes can also reveal the character and attitude or feelings of the people. Sometimes they soothe, give assurance more than the words. Mostly people communicate their feelings quite openly by way of non-verbal communication. Our ability to notice consistency between the verbal and non-verbal communication and also congruency between individual gestures and gesture clusters helps us in developing in positive business as well as personal relationships. This abstract is only an attempt to introduce the useful interesting book to the public. To practise, one has to go through the book carefully and study the art of understanding the body language fully.
