THE BOSTON DRIVER'S HANDBOOK (The BIG DIG Edition)

Book Review by: VijaiKSharma

Original Authors: Ira Gershkoff; Richard Trachtman
Driving a car is an important requirement, as well as a pleasure. But it all depends on the condition of the roads, density
of the traffic, days & timings of the travel & the city culture. This particular book, tells every thing about car driving in Boston, one of America's largest cities, where it can be considered as a challenging assignment. In eight Chapters of this book, the authors have covered this subject in a humourous style, along with black & white photos, line sketches & cartoons. The book starts with philosophy of driving, the law, the safety considerations etc., & the general requirements before starting the use of the car. Chapter two gives details of the street lay out, major neighbourhoods, major roads, harbour tunnels & Tobin bridge etc. Chapter three covers the central artery of Boston, digging, environmental impact & dealing with the rough roads etc. Chapter four discusses some offensive techniques for surviving as a driver in Boston, e.g. the cut off, side squeeze, blocking, left turns, stop & yield signs, rotaries (traffic signals), weaving, tail gating, one-way streets, U-turns, bad traffic situations & the high ways etc. They have also given seven likely bumper-to-bumper situations for avoiding them, & also ten ways for reducing stress, while waiting in traffic. Chapter 5 discusses about common obstacles & hazards like potholes, pedestrians, trolleys, buses, dogs, parked & double parked cars, bicycles, toll booths & trucks etc. The types of streets which generate more pot holes, & the methods for avoiding them are also given. Chapter 6 covering the difficult question about parking, discusses about tickets, tows, resident stickers, use of illegal space, cruise techniques, & then gives suggestions to find parking space around some important areas. Chapter 7 advises us, to prepare for the hazards due to wind, cold, snow, & ice, for a few months in winter, e.g. snow emergencies, general street conditions, parking space entry & exit techniques, blitz approach, getting out, winter maneuvers, skitchers, one way streets, stop signs & intersections. Chapter 8 discusses the advanced maneuvers & harassment techniques, with respect to the taxi cabs, Cadillacs, Honda civics, gas station turns, side walk driving & side walk parking & deceptive use of signals etc.
Some samples of their humour are (quote)Don't even think about parking here.(unquote) and (quote)Prayer upon crossing the threshold is recommended.(unquote) and (quote)Dents do wonders to clear the roadway around you. (unquote). They have also given ten commandments in this field of driving. Towards of the end of the book, a 24 question multiple choice final examination to test our knowledge of driving has been given, along with answers & scoring instructions. The book contains lot of relevant information, tips, & details of safety & time saving aspects etc., for driving in Boston. It is a hilarious guide-book for every one staying in or visiting Boston, irrespective of our being a car driver, a tourist, a commuter, or even a bicyclist, or a pedestrian.
