SONG OF SOLOMON
The Poetic verses of the Song of Solomon are written to capture the beauty of marital
love (in the recent times adolescents have read the verses in Chapter 4 and 7 that describe the woman who is loved, then they have squealed at the words and images) .
Some say that King Solomon wrote the Song in honor of his Shulamite wife to convey the mutual love between the bride and bridegroom. Others say that it is a moving and beautiful tribute to the
Creator whose crowing creation (in Genesis) was to make man into His own image and then to make the woman to be the man’s companion. That such was the ultimate expression of the Creator’s. In writing thus, Solomon has written a most beautiful expression of human love---the love of a man and woman in the purpose of God, the love relationship between husband and wife.
At the same time, Solomon speaks and describes how the picture of the bride and bridegroom and their love gives a glorious picture of God’s love for his people.
Solomon uses words and expressions that are often used to describe Jesus, the Christ, the Son of God, who lives in the New Testament: the rose of Sharon, the Lily of the valleys, a lily among thorns, he pastures His flocks and provides cool places for his flock to be.
In the final 2 chapters, it becomes clear that the loved one is in fact God, the creator. Believers sing many of the verses, such as ‘I am my Beloved’s and He is mine” who go together into the country and spend the night in the villages, rising early to go to vineyards to see the vines, the budding trees and the blossoms that have opened and to see whether the pomegranates have bloomed and that is the time to Give love to God, the Creator.
The author ends his song with words that say love is as strong as death, jealousy as severe as Sheol and its flashes are flashes of fire---the very flame of the Lord.
