The One Minute Manager

Book Review by: Pulickal

Original Authors: Kenneth Blanchard, Ph.D.; Spencer Johnson, M.D.
The One Minute Manager is a short book which could be read in one hour. The book gone into more than five edition speaks
of its popularity. It speaks of how to manage people and institution efficiently and in human way. The book lays out three principles: a) set one miniute goals written in a sheet of paper that could be revised often within a miniute. Setting clear goals tells the person what is he/she striving for. b) One minute praising: follow the endeavours of the person to achieve the goal he has set. When when he does something positive, apprehend it and praise. This should not be manipulative way, but honestly and let the person know that the manager is on his side and he is interested in his welfare and happiness. Do not wait to do this at the end of the goal, but do it immediately. c) Third principle is one minute reprimands. Reprimand the behaviour with true feelings, do it soon, be specific and let him know how you feel about it. But then this should not be letting down or discouraging the person. this is not a negation of the person, but just one of his acts. This should be followed by encouragement to perform better.
The book brings together in a span of 102 pages basic principle of human relationship in the an organisation or a firm. I personally has tried out the method. It is excellent. It enhances the person who works with you, who manages them and the organisation itself.
