Fate

Book Review by: Gori Costa

Original Author: Louis Couperus
This abstract was translated from Noodlot
On a cold night in London a well to do man called Frank finds his once best friend Bertie in front of his house, clothed
in shabby clothes who asks him for some money. Frank immediately takes Bertie into the house and gives him a decent meal and clothes. After a short period Bertie can not be distinguished from a real ''dandy'' and he lives his life in Franks house like a really rich man. Actually Frank enjoys the fact that Bertie presents himself like this and that nobody can see who he really is. After having been some time together, Frank gets kind of drugged on Bertie and vice versa. The story takes a completely different turn when the two decide to make a journey to Norway. In Norway these two meet Eve and her father and Frank immediately falls in love with Eve. Once back in England the relationship between Eve and Franks starts to get more serious. Bertie recognizes that there will be no room for him and that this could mean the end of his prosperity and his friendship with Frank. He decides to thwart the relationship whatever it takes. Bertie succedes in separating these two, but after a couple of years Frank and Eve meet each other again and love comes back. But everything goes wrong when Frank kills Bertie in a impulse of rage, when he finds out that Bertie thwarted his relationship with Eve, so that they could not get married. After he has served his sentence, Frank moves in with Eve, but nothing is the same anymore and at the end they are both so unhappy that they commit suicide, together.
