Edgar Allan Poe and Science: A Cosmic Poet

Book Summary by: Robor

Original Author: Juan Lartigue G.
This article compares the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe to cosmic science. Known as one of the most gifted writers of American
literature, Edgar Allan Poe was born in Boston, Massachusetts, USA in 1809. He is credited with transforming the short story from anecdote to art. He also created the detective story and revamped the psychological thriller. His parents, David Poe, Jr. and Elizabeth Arnold Hopkins, died before he was three and John Allan took him in and baptized him Edgar Allan Poe. After an uneventful childhood, he studied in England for several years. He later moved back to the state of Virginia and attended the University of Virginia for less than a year. John Allan was disappointed in Poe in that he ran up gambling debts which Allan refused to pay. Without any financial support, Poe joined the Army. By this time he had already written his first book, ‘Tamerlane.’ The verses included were in the manner of Byron. John Allan secured his release from the Army and he entered West Point. However, after only six months Poe was dismissed for failure to obey orders. Poe moved in with his widowed aunt, Maria Clemm in Baltimore and wrote fiction to support himself. Maria’s daughter, Virginia, lived there as well and Poe would later marry her before she turned fourteen years old. Edgar Allan Poe’s drinking overshadowed his talent in some circles, causing him the loss of his job as editor of the Southern Literary Messenger. However, the magazine continued to publish his writings. Some of Poe’s most famous writings are ‘The Fall of the House of Usher,’ ‘The Murders in the Rue Morgue,’ ‘The Raven,’ and ‘The Bells.’ Poe’s dark writings continue to be studied by students and scholars alike. On October 7, 1949, Edgar Allan Poe was found dead on a street in Baltimore. Obituary reports state he did of congestion to the brain. The article shows the correlation of Poe's works to Cosmology.
