This book is a deep no-holds-barred look at drug
addiction. The plot is about a spoilt rich kid James, who comes across
a a tough guy who has a severe crack/alcohol addiciction. His wealthy parents pay for his drying-out at the highly expensive Hazelden Clinic. Plot continues, he goes in a complete wiped-out, drug crazed hard kid and comes out semi-repaired and sober.
I must admit that the book is so intense it is very hard to put down. Not only did the author show the reader the depravity of drug and alcohol abuse, how it can ruin a family, he also brought his reader on a voyage of discovery and shows them what it would be like to go through a rehab programme. Another excellent attribute to Frey book is his unwillingness to assign blame to anyone other than himself for his
addiction. APPLAUD...
This book is not for the faint of heart and is written in a very open and honest manner. Some of the descriptions will cause you to wince, feel disgust and complete sorrow for the pain that addiction causes. There are harrowing scenes such as James' visit to the dentist and there are scenes which leave you feeling hope and acceptance at the
strength of the human will.
My final verdict on this book is that it is a very worthwhile read and it clearly shows you the strength and weakness and how much punishment the human body can endure. The author has a very unique and professional pen and his writing can reach his readers with great ease. If you don't read the book I'm sure that it will be made into a movie in the future.
