god of small things is about the events that takes place in the life of a mother and her two children(who are twins) esthapan and rahael. the story is set in kerala, the gods own country, india. the author seems to have been at peace totally while writing this book as the language is very simple and she has not put in any gimmick to sell her book. it is a pure joy to indulge in. she discribes the landscape, the people , the events etc.. with great ease and with lot of naturality. it is the common things that happen in real life that has been depicted in this book. the two children live with their mother who has separated from their father who lives in calcutta a northeastern state of india. they live in their mothers ancestral home. they have their little world with love, play, adventure etc..they sing traditional songs with the other kids and they enjoy their stay ion kerala as they are new to the place. every little thing catches their fantasy and they go on exploring their new world. they see the hardships faced by their mother in having to live at her ancetral house with people of different thoughts and the compromises she has to settle for to just cling on to shelter for them. she falls in love with a servant of the house whom the children like very much. but such a thing is a tabboo in a orthodox household and she has to pay a heavy price for breaking the rules. the servant being an untouchable is punished severely. the twins are seperated after these events take place. they unite after several years and find things are very different from what it used to be when they were children. and they have lots many precious years of their lives togather. the book is a must read. they scenes in the book are really one can identify with and it a good experience through out.
