Aawan

Book Review by: Padmapriya Sushma

Original Author: Chitra Mudgal
"Aawan" is a novel written by Chitra Mudgal . It created ripples in Hindi literary circles because of its bold depidtion
of exploitation of a young girl by anybodywho is powerful either through money or through labour union. The writer has been bold enough to uncover both the capitalist and the so called leaders claiming to stand for the oppressed. The protagonist or the young girl is not only representing the women or female exploitation but a large part of the society in general. It reveals the oppressive systems prevailing right from the level of the family to the working enviroments. The body politics , the power politics, the capitalistic commodification to the labour union , everything has been exposed through this novel. the girls voyage from the labour union office to modelling and tricked into surrogate motherhood in the name of love is an eyeopener to this society hypnotised by visual images thrown into our lives without much choice.
