This is one of the most beautiful books I've ever read! It tells the story of a boy, David Copperfield, whose life gets turned around when his mother marries an ambitious, insensitive man. His stepfather sends him to a school where children are treated very badly as the school owner's only interest is to become rich with the boys. The portrait Dickens makes of that kind of schools at that time is very shocking. David stays in this school until his mother dies due to her husband's lack of care and love, that leads her to an infinite unhappiness and consequently to sickness. After his mother's dead, David is sent by his stepfather to work in the city. Here he finds some good friends, a family that finally loves him and takes care of him. Too bad it doesn't last for long, as the man of the house is taken to prison. David decides to run away and after a lot of suffering he finally finds love in the house of his aunt. It's here that his life truly begins.
This is considered to be a kind of autobiography of Dickens, as it is thought that he had a very unhappy childhood. But it is also a book about hope, love and unconditional friendship. While some people treat David with cruelty (his stepfather and his sister, the owner of the school, his boss in the city) there are a lot more who help him and love him (the family from the city, another family from the coast, his aunt and her lovely friend, his best friend Agnes). There is also an alert to those people who seem to be a great friend but are actually taking advantage of you just to get something they want and who will betray you on the first opportunity they have, like Uriah Heep. This is the story of a boy who went through a lot of suffering but also a lot of happy moments, in order to find that real love is often nearer than we think.
