In space, nothing is as it sems, and madness comes creepingAlthough one of his shorter stories, and certainly one of his few more traditional science fictions stories, it is still a thought-provoking and chilling tale of human falabillity and supernatural horror. In the future humans are exploring the solar systems, and the planet Venus has been colonized, not su much because of the view, but as a step in the hunt for energy crystals. When the main character, Kenton J. Stanfield, hired by a large energy company to search for crystals, stumbles upon the largest crystal he has ever seen, he also stumbles upon a sinister mystery, and a race against time ensues.Taking a break away from Chtulhu and more "normal" supernatural entities, this dark science fiction is a treat to both the casual Lovecraft fan, as well as a worthy read for any fan of science fiction. It does not contain much of the usual Lovecraft "stuff" (Old Ones, insanity, occultism et al), and as such it might just be what a newcomer, wary of all that silly monster talk otherwise associated with H.P.'s authorship, need to jump into one of the masters of the horror literature.
