The Hobbit or There and Back Again

Book Review by: ChristineONeill

Original Author: J.R.R.Tolkien
While this story was originaly written with children in mind, like the Harry Potter stories of today it was embraced whole
heartedly by the adults who read it to thier young ones.It is an enchanting fairy story about a strange little creature with hairy feet who lives in a burrowlike dwelling in the Shire in MiddleEarth. The creature who we soon discover to be one Bilbo Baggins is a most ordinary little chap and not one who would be associated with having wild adventures, which of course is precisely what he ends up doing when he is basically hi-jacked into becoming a thief for a band of Dwarfs intent on regaining thier ancient inheritence which has been stolen by a fierce dragon. It will be Bilbo's job to face the Dragon in his lair and reclaim the Dwarfs lost fortune. The long road to Moira where the treasure lays hidden deep within the long disused mines is fraught with danger and adventure, some extremly pleasent such as a meeting with the elves but other meetings with giant spiders and trolls are not so nice! That the Hobbit has stood the test of time is no surprise to anyone who picks up this wonderful book, that it can be enjoyed by young and old alike is also not surprising, such is the mastery of Tolkiens script. If a moral is to be had within this story, it is that sometimes the little guy wins! While the Hobbit stands alone as a novel it is very difficult to read it and not want to read more about the creatures of 'Middle Earth', thus making it an almost essential prelude to the literary saga 'The Lord of the Rings.' The Hobbit' is a book that once read ,will be read and read again.

    Inaccuracy

I just want to point out that Thorin&co. fought Smaug on the Lonely Mountain - Moria only really comes into The Lord Of The Rings. Other than that I enjoyed the review - thanks!
