Revered as an Apostle of the principles of Truth and Non--violence, Mahatma
Gandhi is known as a proponent of lofty and elevated Ideals--however , this Autiobiography touches the lesser known and seldom discussed aspects of his personality (and , this was the purpose behind writing the
autobiography )--aspects of his life , such as , his shrewd vision , impeccable leadership qualities , his down--to--earth approach towards self and others , his capacity as a humorist of the finest order.
The Work is a description of Gandhi's inner and outer life--his thoughts , emotions , the Societies he joined, the Books which influenced his philosophy and understanding of life, the
great Thinkers and men of action he came in contact with , during his lifetime.More than an account of the political role played by Gandhi , in the Indian Independence Struggle, the Book is a description of the
experiments which Gandhi carried out in his lifetime and the Theories which he developed out of those experiments.
Gandhi's experiments range from community living, modern versus traditional education to experiments in dietetics and
sexual restraint. Gandhi spends considerable time on the need of each individual to control sexual passion with a view to achieve higher aims , in life.At the end , the Book reveals Gandhi to be a warm and genial man , who was prone to all the temptations and
weaknesses of human existence--however , Gandhi was a man who developed the philosophy and practise to conquer the temptations and weaknesses of life and thus he is regarded as a "mahatma " (Great
Soul ). Gandhi was a man with superior levels of soul--force and the autobiography traces his individual and collective journey in the development of the same soul--force.Unlike most autobiographies by great public figures , gandhi does not neglect accounts of his personal life and describes himself as a jealous husband and an ambiguous father figure.
