ANNE FRANK REMEMBERED/MIEP GIES (with the help of Aloison Leslie gold)
Miep Gies was born in Vienna, Austria in 1909. When the first World
War began, there was a shortage of food, and at the age of ten her
parents were told that something must be done or she will die. She was
sent to the Netherlands with other children and there she was adopted.
She visited her parents some times, but by the time she was 22 she knew
she was Dutch.
At the age of 24 she first started working for Otto Frank in his
company for making jam. He was an immigrant from Germany and was
waiting for his wife and two daughters to arrive as well. Miep found
she and Otto agreed on political subjects, and were both horrified and
troubled by Hitler''s anti Jewish move. Otto especially so, since he was
Jewish.
Her relationship with Otto and his family became closer, and she was
invited to there house every so often. Sometimes she would go with her
husband to-be Henk Gies in 1938 Hitler invaded Austria and the citisens
cheered him, and the Jews were made to clean public toilets and other
things of that sort. Miep decied she must rid herself of her Austrian
passport, but instead of that she was given a German passport.
