Motley Crüe, The Dirt; an autobiography

Book Review by: enlosandes

Original Authors: Tommy Lee; Vince Neil; Mick Mars; Nikki Sixx; Neil Strauss
One of them killed someone, another punched his girlfriend in the mouth breaking her front teeth,
another was homeless (despite making millions) due to his love for drugs and the other walked around like a zombie. Yet, they rocked our world in the 80's!  Who are they? None other than rock band Motley Crüe.
In their bestselling, all-telling tale, “Motley Crüe, The Dirt”, the reader learns all about the true debauchery of a rock star. Through their own words, and a little guiding from author Neil Strauss, we follow the rock stars from their beginnings to where they are today.
The band, the birth child of bassist Nikki Sixx, started out in dingy, dirty houses and the crowded, smoky bars of Sunset Drive in Los Angeles. They were the first to glamorize the hard rock world with make-up, big hair and tight Lycra. With such a fashion statement heads were turned, girls became moist.
From the very beginning, drugs and sex were the main foods of choice for the crazy foursome. The book wanders through various stories of sexual hedonism; from the normal rock star orgy to sticking an earpiece up the vagina of a willing participant and asking her to call her mom with the same phone. Of course, the escapades were always hand in hand with drug of choice; ie, alcohol, cocaine and heroin (though not limited to just those three.) The chemical alterations played such an important roll that the band divulged that they had their own personal drug dealer follow them on tour and meet them at the airport with needed drug fix. To say the least, the Motley anthem truly was “sex, drugs and rock and roll.”
However, time takes its tole and as with all excessive behavior the pied piper must be paid. The drug-induced and drunken revelry had to come to an end. Though the rock star “heroes”, as they are referred to in the book, fight a gallant battle to remain true to their rock anthem. Through the tragedies of killing a friend in a drunken car accident and the death of his little girl Vince Neil never gives up the bottle. Nikki Sixx is so addicted to the warmth of heroin that even his own death wont stop the drug cravings. Tommy Lee battles with his need for both drugs and drink or the love of his Pamela. Mick Mars falls into a schizophrenic depression because of his need for pain killers.
"Motley Crüe, The Dirt" is a fast, spellbinding roller coaster ride. Even if you are a total prude, this book is hard to put down. And it should be. How often is a book written so well that the common person feels like they are right there, along side their rock star, partying it up too?  If you are looking for an entertaining read that answers the question of what rock stars really do, you wont be disappointed.
