A Farewell to Arms - Ernest Hemingway
A semi-autobiographical
novel written by Ernest Hemingway in 1929 and it's a product of his own experience as a young soldier in Italy. It was published on September 27, 1929 in 31,050 copies. A
story about
war,
love, hope and faith. Every important event of the war is overshadowed by the strong love story behind. The story was set in Italy in World War I, and it's a tragic love story of an English
nurse and an American ambulance lieutenant during the war. Henry falls in love with the English nurse Catherine and after he is wounded she tends to him in the hospital during his recuperation, and their relationship develops. Catherine was pregnant now and romance ends abruptly when Henry must return to the front. Henry escapes death, finds Catherine and they flees to Switzerland on the eve of Henry's arrest for deserting. The child was born dead and Catherine dies shortly after.
A
film was made in 1932,and it was remade 1957. In 1996 film IN LOVE AND WAR was based on the same backgrounds.
The
book is written in Hemingway's staccato style and is full of beauty. It portrays passionate and undying love in a manner that will be a revelation to those not already admirers of Hemingway. A superlative, unrestored example of Hemingway's classic story of love and war, arguably his masterpiece, and certainly one of the highspots of 20th Century literature.
