Kamenashi has two older brothers and one younger brother. His parents sent in his application to Johnny & Associates Entertainment
Agency on his behalf and he was accepted at age 14. At that time, he was in the same interview
group as current KAT-TUN teammates Jin Akanishi and Yuichi Nakamaru. The 6-member group KAT-TUN was originally chosen and formed as backup dancers for Johnny''s group KinKi Kids. Their unexpected popularity however, led the
talent agency to allow them to expand into a separate group which, strangely enough, was nevertheless not allowed to debut
officially until 5 years after their formation. By 2006, KAT-TUN''s fanbase made it one of Japan''s most prominent j-pop idol groups and KAT-TUN officially debuted in March 2006 with their
single ''Real Face.'' Kamenashi is the "K" of KAT-TUN and one of the two most popular members. Although he is the youngest member of KAT-TUN, he is considered the group''s unofficial "leader". He is good at public speaking and often speaks as MC for KAT-TUN on television programs and concerts. Kamenashi has
starred in a Kinpachi-Sensei drama, a Kindaichi Special and
Gokusen 2 with Jin Akanishi, for which he wrote the lyrics and sang the song "Kizuna". He also starred in
Nobuta wo Produce along with Tomohisa Yamashita from NEWS of the same talent agency. The two of them released a single called "Seishun Amigo" under the unit name
Shūji to Akira in late 2005.
