Crank

Book Review by: CLNortham

Original Author: Ellen Hopkins
This book is a very easy read, but heart-wrenching tale of a mother''s battle to pull her daughter out of the underbelly
of a city filled with drugs and temptation.  Written in Diary format from the daughter''s point of view, we see the gradual downfall of a once intelligent young lady with a bright and promising future.  The teenage daughter of divorced parents, she goes on a visit with her father and in the short span of two weeks, gets a taste of drugs and sex and creates a new identity for herself.  Once home she inwardly battles the temptations that she brought home with her and eventually gives in.  She becomes a slave to her new personality and a slave to drugs and sex.  Her Mother watches the decline and is at an obvious loss as to how to save her daughter because at first she doesn''t know what has gotten a hold of her.  Her husband tries in vain to convince her that her daughter has gotten into drugs and she cannot be persuaded.  The story continues through the spiral as the daughter continues to use drugs and be promiscuous.  It has a bitter-sweet ending and a strong lesson can be found in the story.  The book has a rating guideline for 14 years or older.  As a parent myself, I would use parental discretion and only allow those children to read this who are mature enough to understand the lesson and not glorify the story.  Parents, Beware!  Schools are using this book as a learning tool to try to teach kids what not to do, but they are starting it in middle school.  Talk to your children’s principals and make sure that your child is only reading books that you approve!  Stay involved in your children’s lives and make a difference that way!
