Michelle Obama: An American Story

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: David Colbert
This is a great inspirational book about the first African-American First Lady, Michelle Obama. The author devotes an entire
chapter to explore her family roots, reaching back to stories of slavery on a rice plantation in South Carolina and historical struggles for Civil Rights. Michelle Obama is said to be a strong, focused person who has never been afraid to speak her mind. When she was thirteen, her typing teacher tried to give her a “B”. But Michelle knew she had earned an “A” and argued her case until her grade was raised. Three years later Michelle told her guidance counselor she planned to attend an Ivy League school. “You can’t go there,” her counselor told her. “Your test score aren’t high enough.” Despite her teacher’s doubts, Michelle graduated from Princeton anyway!
There are many amusing stories about President Obama and the First Lady – from their first date at Baskin Robbins ice cream shop, to their trips in his raggedy car with the rusty hole in the floor, to their historical new life in the White House with daughters Malia and Sasha. When they first met, Barack Obama had to ask Michelle LaVaughn Robinson out for a date not once, not twice, but several times. Each time she refused. In fact, she tried to set Barack up with her friends instead!
Two sections of color photos show Michelle growing up on Chicago’s South Side to the “Yes We Can!” campaign trail toward Washington, D.C. Personal quotes throughout the book reveal Michelle’s spirited sense of humor. For example, Barack had to give a speech before the 2004 Democratic National Convention. It was a speech that would make or break his political career, and he seemed pretty stressed. What words of wisdom does his wife give him before he stepped on stage? “Just don’t screw it up, buddy.”
