Book Review by: SC Umana

Original Author: Alan Saldaña
On December 1st of 2000, Vicente Fox Quesada became the President of the United States of Mexico. Vicente Fox Quesada was
born in Mexico city, on July 2nd of 1942. He is the second of nine siblings; his parents are José Luis Fox, who worked in agriculture, and Mercedes Quesada. Since he was a child, when he was only four days old, he was taken to live in San Cristobal Ranch, a small community in the San Francisco del Rincón borough, in the state of Guanajuato. At the ranch he had the opportunity to live with the children of the land owners, administrators or workers, he shared games and mischief with them, and according to his own words, to get to know up close and personally one of the maladies that can be avoided in our country: poverty. Vicente is a polite, respectful, down to earth and honest person. He knows how to value the common people’s loyalty and see the potential that all of Mexico has. Beside his four children: Ana Cristina, Vicente, Paullina and Rodrigo, all of them adopted, he has shared the happiness of home and work. The Foxes have been able to reconcile their family life with the challenge that working for Mexico represents. He studied Business Administration at the Iberoamerican University and received a diploma in High Management; this course was taught by Professors from the Business School of Harvard, in Boston, Massachusetts, United States of America. He started working at the Coca Cola Group, where he began as supervisor of Routes. Inside a delivery truck he had the chance to travel and get to visit all of the country. Because of his performance and perseverance he was promoted until he had the position of president of the company for Mexico and Latin America, having been the youngest manager in the company. In Guanajuato, Vicente Fox has participated with great enthusiasm as entrepreneur, politician, and in social and educational issues; as it is the case of the Amigo Daniel Orphanage in which all members of the Fox family are involved. He has worked as a Consultant for the Mexico-American Chamber of Commerce, A.C. y as the Director of the Fox Group, companies dedicated to the fields of agriculture, cattle, agro industry and shoes confection. He joined the National Action Party (PAN, according to its Spanish acronym) in the eighties, motivated by Manuel J. Clouthier. In 1988 he was elected federal congressman for the Third District of León, Guanajuato. At the Congress he gave special attention to agricultural issues. It was during this season that he also wrote in national and regional newspapers. In 1991 he contended in the elections for Governor of the State of Guanajuato, in which the Institutional Revolutionary Party (PRI according to its Spanish acronym), was declared as winner, but the citizens unhappiness was so evident that the State Congress appointed as internal Governor Carlos Medina Plasencia from the National Action Party (PAN). Again, in 1995 he runs for Governor and gets elected by a significant majority. During his administration, Guanajuato became the fifth most important state for the economy of Mexico. Fox was totally accountable for both the finances of the State and his own personal statements. As a result of such good government outcomes, Vicente Fox was elected candidate for the Alliance for a Change (PAN-PVEM), for the presidential elections of 2000. Vicente Fox won the elections on July 2nd and becomes the first candidate from an opposing party who got to be the President of the Country. Among the commitments of his government is promoting growth in the country with quality, a better allotment of income and offering all children a better country; free from corruption and full of opportunities. Vicente Fox Quesada was married to Marta Sahagun Jiménez on July 2nd, 2001.
