A versatile genius, son of affluent
Tagore family of Kolkata.Composed
innumerable Bengali Literatures, Novels, Poems, Short Stories, Dance drama
songs. Also, had contribution in Science, Philosophy, art etc.
Traditional type of education system did not
attract him. Had therefore, no formal education but was brought up in
cultural atmosphere of Tagore family. Under great influence of elder brother
Jyotirindra Nath and wife Kadamberi Devi for pursuit of knowledge in poems.
At the age of 17, went to England to become a Barrister. But again traditional
pattern of education did not suit him and so, returned to India.
Participated in dance drama "Balmiki Pratibha"
which is his own composition. In the year 1882, wrote the poem "Nirjharer
Sapnabhanga"- coming to life after a dormant spring- which is his one of his
classic pieces of writing published in a paper called "Sarswati Sammalan".Criticised
by contemporary writers as there is radical departure both in form and content
from the traditional type in writing in vogue in those days.
Founded "Bhramha Charyay Ashram" at
Bolepur, West Bengal - a school for training students not only school curriculum
but also morality, etiquette, behavioral pattern which is now converted to Viswa-
bharati University.
Involved in the movement the "Division of
Bengal", in 1905. Became Nobel Laureate in 1913. In the year 1919, relinquished
"Night hood" honoured by British Government to protest against them for
massacre of innocent people at Jalinwalabag, in Punjab. The famous "Gitanjali"
which is collection of his own songs called "Rabindra Sangeet"- songs of Rabindra
Nath is his own composition. Many renowned Engilish writers were impressed to
read english version of Gitanjali.
Travelled Japan, England, France, America in
the year 1916. Invited in 1924 by New Government, Republic of China. In 1929
went to Canada to participate in the meeting organised by educational experts.
His pictures shown in an exibition in Berlin.Conferred Doctorate title by Oxford
University in 1940. Died in 1941.
