Carlotta - Not That Kinda Girl

Book Review by: Davie

Original Author: Prue Macsween / Carlotta
Carlotta is definitely not the traditional type of girl, in more ways
than one. She inspired the hit 1994 movie starring
Guy Pearce and
Terrence Stamp “Priscilla Queen of The Dessert” and was once the lead
of Sydney’s Les Girls cabaret restaurant – awarded best showgirl
performance out of Paris! Also one of the first in Australia to under
go gender reassignment surgery, now you can see why she’s not that
kinda girl!
"Not That Kinda Girl" is Carlotta's second autobiography, written with
help from her good friend, and old co-star, on Ten's hit TV show
"Beauty and The Beast", Prue Macsween. The biography follows Carlotta's
life - from Richard the Balmain boy to amateur showgirl Carol, right
through to the transsexual superstar of Les Girls, Carlotta. It
explores various aspects of a once troubled childhood to coming out
back in the 60's, through to gender reassignment surgery and stardom.
This is one autobiography written in words so profound you can picture
Carlotta reading to you. You will laugh with her (and at her) but also
cry and gasp in awe at her once tragic life. Read about the history of
Australian culture back in the 60’s when mobs ran the streets of Kings
Cross. When drag queens were locked up, homosexuals were beaten and
their only hide out was after work parties in David Jones city store.
Carlotta is one girl who will go down in Australian History, even if
just as an old battleaxe!
Truly one of those rare books with the perfect amount of diverse
emotions – excitement, sadness, comedy and thrill. I couldn’t put it
down and books don’t often hold my attention span! It will clear a
space in your heart and hit home even if you are homophobic. Carlotta
definitely is not that kinda girl!
