The Long Hard Road Out of Hell

Book Review by: mikeyleeray

Original Authors: Marilyn Manson; Neil Strauss
Who is Marilyn Manson?
To those in the Christian Right who pray for his buses to break down,
for his equipment
to malfunction and for his concerts to be cancelled,
he is Public Enemy Number One. To the army of fans who attend his
concerts, he is a shock rocker who has dared to challenge the status
quo and the hypocrisy of mainstream society.
But before the sex, drugs and fame he was simply Brian Warner, a kid
going to Christian School, trying to make sense of the various dogmas
that were instilled into him by a multitude of teachers and family
members while at the same time discovering rather unsavory and harsh
truths about those closest to him, most notably his grandfather.
From the beginning, Marilyn Manson and the Spooky Kids, he knew how to
entertain and shock an audience and the antics the band got up to on
stage are so outrageous that they almost lend credibility to the faked
affidavits that various religious organisations in America such as the
America Family Foundation have on file. Almost.
But Manson is not just your typical rocker, living the life of sex,
drugs and rock ''n'' roll. As he is swept up in the absurdity of a life
of celebrity he makes some very poignant observations about celebrity
and what some people will do to attain it. Ultimately, out of all the
shocks and unbelievable details, it is his quirky wit and offbeat
character that shines through the most and will ensure him a permanent
place in pop culture.
