The Mixed-Up Chameleon

Book Review

Original Author: Eric Carle
The Mixed-up Chameleon is a picture book with a very good message for
children. The reading level of the book is between the ages of 4
and 8 however the message is good for all people, even adults who have
not currently learned the lesson that is taught.
The book starts out with a normal chameleon that believes that his life
is boring. He knows that he can change his color, however one day
at the zoo he learns that he can also change his shape and
dreams. Therefore, one day when he is in the zoo he walks by the
different animals. He wonders what lilfe would be like if he was
to change into the individual animals that he passes by. For
instance, how it would feel to be a giraffe with a long neck, a fish
and swim in the ocean, and a elephant with a trunk. By the end of
the book he has turned into several different animals, however he
doesn't lose the feature from the animal that he tried to turn into the
time before. So he ends up having a long neck, a trunk, fins, and
several other funny body parts. The story ends with the chameleon
deciding that being like all these animals is not as interesting as it
would have seemed to be. So he wishes that he was back to his
normal self.
The moral os this story and the lesson that this mixed up chameleon
learns is that you shouldn't wish that you were someone else.
That you should be happy with who you are and what you look like.
He realizes that life being like someone else is not all it is cut out
to be and in the end he would only like to be his normal self. It
also teaches the importance of wishing. You shouldn't wish to be
like something that you aren't because you may end up getting that wish
and not liking it in the end. Story teaches young children the
importance of being different and that we are all unique.
