Twilight

Book Review   by:DP     Original Author: Stephanie Meyer
ª

Twilight is an
expression of all the intensity and passion that is intrinsic in a teenager’s
life. Stephanie Meyer has the remarkable ability to bring her characters to
life, ingraining their physical presence in the mind of readers. The novel
reads like realist fiction, but exhibits characters out of the fantasy genre;
despite this slight incongruence, the novel is easy to read with aspects that
will attract all readers. Once started, the book is difficult to step back from
for fear that the characters will simply carry on without you.

The story begins with Isabella,
a clumsy young girl mature beyond her years, starting school in a new town. Characters
are introduced slowly but thoroughly; the writing is vivid and enticing, developing
personality for every person introduced. As necessary within a high school,
there is a group of beautiful people who form an impenetrable clique. As Edward
is introduced, a breath-taking young man, intrigue is brought into the story. Later,
we learn that he is a vampire; as the story progresses the impression he
presents morphs from that of an angry and arrogant snob, to an incredibly
self-controlled and caring creature of the night. Meyer challenges all
generally accepted myths about vampires and creates a new breed.

Twilight is a
calculated combination of action, deception, frustration and, of course, love. A
novel for young adults, this reading is guaranteed to have teenagers at the
edge of their seats demanding more. When books come this good, there is no need
for television. Moreover, Meyer encourages values such as honor,
responsibility, safety and respect, cleverly disguised by the fantastic
fiction. This novel offers youth an opportunity to delve into a world that
seems much more interesting than their own, yet it is a world where authority
still rules. A book parents and children alike can enjoy.
