On Super Bowl Sunday sports fans watch two American football teams battle for the National Football League (NFL) championship title. The book By My Brother’s Side was written by NFL sports stars Ronde and Tiki Barber. Ronde Barber played defense for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the Super Bowl XXXVII champs. Tiki Barber played for the New York Giants, although he had already retired by the time the Giants won Super Bowl XXXXII. These brothers are no strangers to the word teamwork, for they teamed up together to write a whole series of children’s books about their beloved sport, football.
Although the twin brothers were born premature, their determination to never give up helped them overcome their small stature. By My Brother’s Side tells the story of the young Barber boys determined to climb a dangerously steep hill - on bicycles! Before they get to the top, Tiki takes an awful spill and breaks his leg!
"It's a serious injury. I'm not sure he will ever play again," - the doctor
But Tiki is determined to prove him wrong. I liked this book because it illustrates virtues like patience and perseverance. Tiki had to learn to sit and watch his twin brother Ronde play ball while he waited for his leg to heal.
Motivational sayings, like "Believe in yourself and others will, too." and "We have to keep working at it" may sound a little corny to adult readers, but the words are intended to inspire young athletes. Recommended for players aged 9 – 12.
