John Cabot was born in Italy in the mid 1400s during the Age of Exploration. Cabot grew up to be a merchant and a captain of a ship sailing in the mediterranean sea trading goods from Italy for silk and spices from Egypt. The goods John Cabot brought to Italy were mostly from China, they would come through land routes crossing the Ottoman Empire. The goods were expensive to buy because Turks back then would impose taxes when crossing their territory. So John Cabot decided to find a sea route that would save him the taxes. King Henry VII of England financed John Cabot so he could sail to China. John Cabot never found China, instead he landed on an island near Canada. He than went back to England to get more supplies, and was joined by a fleet carrying people and goods so they can establish themselves on the new continent, but the ships never reached their destinations.
