She also couldn't make herself to accept the shy Mary-Lou, even though this shy girl has adored her and has been following her everywhere. Well, there is a reason for Mary-Lou behavior. Darrel had saved Mary-Lou from drowning, when Gwendoline intentionally pushed and held her head under water while their having swimming session. Almost all her friends accept her apology and admire her bravery in coming out to apologize and admit her mistake on her own, but not Gwendoline. She is now becoming more angry and hated Darrel and all her friends. Mary-Lou on the other hand, worships Darrel, since she believes that she is so coward and helpless. This drives Darrel crazy, she tried to pushed Mary-Lou into believing that she can stand on her own by acting harsh to Mary-Lou kindness, but that only making Mary-Lou more down. Darrel could not understand Mary-Lou, but she will. Another person that Darrel could not understand is Sally Hope. Since the very first she arrived, Sally Hope has been quite and cold to everybody. Anything that Darrel know about Sally is coming from her mother. Apparently, Darrel Mother has made friend with Sally’s mother. From her mother, Darrel know that Sally has a baby sister, but when Darrel try to talk about it Sally became angry and even denying that she has a sister. Sally has not sent news to her mother for a while. Darrel was asked to tell Sally to write to her mother. However, Sally was harsh and rude to Darrell. This make Darrel hot headed and unintentionally pushed Sally, which cause Sally to hit her stomach onto some furniture. Of course Darrel regretted her action, but the situation becomes worse when Sally has been missing classes since the quarrel, and has been taken to the school infirmary. Feeling guilty of causing Sally’s sickness, scared of admitting it to the head master, afraid of getting herself expelled, and afraid of letting down her parents make Darrel miserable and understand Mary-Lou. However, Darrell finally admits what she did in front of her head master and her father. Dr Rivers, Darrell’s Father came to her school to take out Sally appendix, which is the reason of Sally condition. Darrel is not expelled and is forgiven by Sally and her headmaster. Her action even help Sally, since from her story Darrel uncover the reason of Sally being so quite and distant to her parents. Some visits from Darrell has make Sally feeling even better and somehow bring Sally and Darrel close together.
