Mrs. Piggle Wiggle's Magic

Book Review   by:SandraKae     Original Author: Betty MacDonald
ª

Mrs. Piggle Wiggle has a way with children. No matter how messy or clumsy or rude a child might be, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle is patient and kind, and all children who meet her learn to love her. She always knows how to turn difficult situations around, (usually with a few kind words and of course, homemade cookies), while never at the expense of a child’s feelings. Parents appreciate her too because, after soliciting the advice of friends and neighbors, they eventually find that she can cure their children’s bad habits, even after all else has failed. In Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s Magic, seven bad habits are successfully cured in most unusual (and hilarious) ways. The Bad-Table-Manners cure involves a pig named Lester, and, in no time, a mysterious powder sprinkled in the ears cures a Thought-You-Saiders epidemic. The Waddler-I-Doers find plenty to do when Mrs. Piggle Wiggle turns a rainy day into a unforgettable top-secret indoor treasure hunt! Just as the title implies, most of the cures in Mrs. Piggle’s Magic involve some sort of magic (whether an unusual pig or a magic powder or something called ignorance tonic). Although somewhat unlike the first book, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle, in which children are cured by slightly more believable methods, this book is great fun, wonderfully imaginative, and not to be missed by fans of Mrs. Piggle Wiggle and her unusual childhood cures. Betty MacDonald’s Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s Magic was published in 1949. Originally introduced in 1947, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle has delighted children for generations. Eight years after its original publication, Hilary Knight’s comical illustrations were added and enjoyed in this perfect read-aloud book series that continues to entertain kids of all ages. Don’t miss Mrs. Piggle Wiggle’s Farm (1954), and Hello, Mrs. Piggle Wiggle (1957).
