Sabriel is a
horror/
fantasy by Australian author Garth Nix. It tells the tale of the quest of the girl for whom the book is
named to find her father, the Mage Abhorsen and bring him back from the
dead. In the world of "Sabriel" there is a wall which separates Ancelstierre, which the reader is to imagine is a sort of Alternate England, from the Old
Kingdom. The old Kingdom is a place where the Undead roam freely and Charter Magic and Necromancy are practiced. The role of Abhorsen has been passed down through the generations in Sabriel''s family. The Abhorsen is the opposite of the Necromancer.Using his special bells he returns the dead to their realm. In the novel Sabriel''s father is banished to the farthest regions in the realm of the dead by a powerful evil
spirit named Kerrigor. When a messenger spirit arrives at her boarding school in Ancelstierre bearing The Abhorsen''s bells and his sword, Sabriel realises what has happened to her father and is forced to leave school and cross over into the old Kingdom where she takes on the role and tools of Abhorsen. On her quest she is accompanied by a spirit named Mogget who is confined to the shape of a cat. Later on in the
journey Sabriel awakes a member of the Royal court from centuries ago who was in a suspended state on the edge of death. The man goes by the name of Touchstone and is the romantic interest for Sabriel. Together the three of them journey across the old kingdom and fight off masses of undead in a desperate attempt not only to save Sabriel''s father but to stop Kerrigor before he consumes not only the Old Kingdom but Ancelstierre in his evil.
