Man in the Moon

Book Review by: kayoung

Original Author: K. A. Young
In this realistic novel set in small town Texas, a sixth-grade girl keeps the golden rule and finds that reality can be even
better than she imagined.
Theme: Friends are not always who I imagine or expect or want them to be.  But they can still be my friends.  Life is often NOT the way I imagine or expect or perhaps even want it to be.  But it is my life to accept and make the most of.
Man in the Moon addresses contemporary issues such as:
—Moral values and spiritual growth
—Consequences of choices
—Peer pressure and acceptance of others
—Challenges of emotional and physical handicaps
—Development of self-confidence, and more importantly, confidence in GOD
—Diversity of families and individuals reaching out in love to one another
—Courage to dream while being able to face reality
Plot: Sixth-grader, Maxey Dove, is an overly imaginative girl who has convinced herself her peers will accept her and that her absentee father will return to see her if only she can star in a school play ... but she stutters. To achieve her goals, she must learn to consider others and face the challenges of reality without giving up on her dreams.
In this book, you will meet Maxey Dove, the girl whose imagination challenges reality.
—Will she convince Mrs. Cannon, sixth-grade drama teacher, to let her star in a play?
—Will she be friends again with Angel McGregor, who wants the leading role, too?
—Will she give in to her desire to avenge herself or will she do what is right?
—Can she help Rory Shaver, her 13-year-old neighbor who has been acting strangely?
—Can she control her imagination to solve the mystery of the Holiday Hoodlum?
—How will she handle her conflicting emotions when Mama begins dating another man?
—Will she be able to face reality and still believe in the Man in the Moon?
Relevant Details:The book contains no offensive language, sexual innuendo, descriptions of violence, or sorcery.  Completely age-appropriate for readers 8-12, it nevertheless appeals to readers ages 8 to 88.  Both adults and children have laughed and cried while reading this book and have not wanted to put it down. The book includes over 20 line drawings that enhance the story.
