Diary Entry of a Girl Child

Book Review by: dhawanbm

Original Author: Dhawanbm
Our society is gender biased. It is evident from the diary content of a small girl child who is a victim of this male
dominated society.

Sunita wrote in her diary on 29th December at 10.30 pm about how she felt at the discrimination she was meted out by her parents. There is discrimination between her and her brother Deepak made by her parents. Deepak aged 9 is last born of the three siblings and she is the eldest. She actually felt it much. It made her day pass miserably. She cited in her diary how her father scolded her without any fault of hers. At some petty issue her mother would ask her to do some house hold chore. Father gave her only Rupees five whereas her brother was fondly given Rs ten. He always drew a frowning face in case she asked for anything from the market but smiled at Deepak. He hugged him often but she was shooed away on one pretext or other. Her mother too drew a fallen face.
Even last week at new year he was given a new dress and branded shoes whereas she was wearing only old party frock and sported rugged shoes. Sunita’s parents were overjoyed at Deepak’s first division, but her standing first with distinction was simply ignored and didn’t evoke much joy in the family. Often she is made to help her mother with or without scoldings. At night they all watched TV but she was rebuked. This all made her feel life as intolerable. She can’t tolerate discrimination and she questions her parent’s wisdom and feels helpless what to do.
This shows that Sunita is a very sensitive child and has little patience. She pines for ideal things and a virtuous life. She has the potential to do something in her life. One thing is clear that she can’t tolerate second rate treatment in her own house. It may be she would raise a banner against such attitudes, especially towards fair sex in a male dominated society.
