“The Famous Five – Five Go To
Smuggler’s Top” by Enid Blyton
In this book the story only starts at Kirrin Cottage and
continues in a mysterious place called
Smuggler’s Top. The reason is that due to strong wind a tree collapsed on the house, therefore the children were being sent by Uncle Quentin to another scientist colleague. Luckily they find at Smuggler’s Top friendly Pierre Lenoir, a boy otherwise nicknamed Sooty, who studies at the same boarding school as Julian and Dick. Right from the beginning Sooty seems very cooperative and
leads them through a net of secret underground passages. From him they learn about some history of the place. This boy has an innovative mind, he helps George hide her dog Timmy, since Mr. Lenoir does not want animals at his home. Block, the deaf servant gives the children the impression that he really can hear although most of the time his face looks frozen. The story gets complicated when Uncle Quentin and Sooty disappear without trace. In this book our hero Timmy, the faithful dog, finds the two being held as prisoners by Mr. Barling the known local smuggler. The brave dog leads Uncle Quentin and Sooty to freedom.
