Anne of Green Gables is a
classic novel written by Canadian children's author Lucy Maud (or L.M.) Montgomery.
The Cuthberts, Matthew Cuthbert, an elderly Canadian bachelor, and his sister, Marilla, own a farm on Prince Edward Island. Due to their situation that they are no longer able to maintain their farm as in their younger years, they decide to take in an orphan boy to help with the daily chores.
By mistake, the Cuthberts are sent an 11-year-old redhead, Anne Shirley. She immediately likes the farmhouse Green Gables, but fears that the Cuthberts will send her back to the orphanage. Anne shortly charms Matthew but at first, not Marilla. Anne has a way of being straightforward and bubbly, although she is sincere and affectionate. Eventually, she won Marilla's heart.
The rest of the story describes the adventures and misadventures of Anne Shirley as an adolescent girl in relation to her age group and her school activities. It also tells about her first courtship, the excitement of first love. Anne tends to be dreamy and romantic at heart, at the same she has such vitality that her character traits often gets her overwhelmed, while disciplined back to reality by Marilla's level-headedness.
There are subsequent novels that follow "Anne of Green Gables," including "Anne of Avonlea," "Anne of the Island," and "Anne of Ingleside." Anne Shirley is a fascinating and heart warming character that has endeared her to young readers all over the world. "Anne of Green Gables" has made Montgomery a famous children's author, especially to
young girls.
