This is a short but beautiful
children''s book, written by one of the best, greatest, and most famous of children''s authors,
Lois Lenski. Writing in the early 1950s, she has created a timeless and interesting, as well as charming,
children''s book with a simple premise -- what two little children, a brother and sister, do on a
summer''s day. There are little poems, rhyming, one to a page, four lines each, which describe the children''s doings on a summer day of play. There are all kinds of new ideas to keep kids busy and happy and having fun, if you and they haven''t thought of them already. Each poem occupies one page; on the facing page is an illustration perfectly a propos of the rhyme. The two-colour illustrations are delightful: naive, innocent, and yet full of beauty, charm, and grace. There is a song at the beginning: ON A SUMMER DAY (the words are by Lois Lenski; the music by clyde Robert Bulla). There are four parts, melody and harmony (treble, alto, baritone and a fairly high bass part), scored for piano and voice.
The book itself is printed in eye-easy dark leaf green, and is ideal for young children (unless they are red-green colorblind), with a very easy, yet never strained, vocabulary. Easy to recommend, beautiful to read, fun to share. An excellent book overall, especially for toddlers and early readers.
