Rajan was a renowned business man and was known among his friends as a man of destiny. One thing which was particular about him was that he was a firm believer of God and a regular worshiper of Goddess Kali. As was the custom, the underprivileged and the poor belonging to the lower castes were not allowed to enter the
temple as it was considered that they would impure the place.
Rajan was a regular visitor to the temple and often discussed the things with Pujari of the temple, regarding social issues and the ones related to celebrations of festivals etc. He was very particular about the decorum and sanctity of the temple and often rued about the presence of so many beggars at the entrance. He often suggested to Pujari, to get them away, so that people can pass through and have darshan of the deity.
It happened so many times that he was
annoyed at the entry of shudras in the temple vicinity that he even sternly
told them to stay away. It was the
usual topic of discussion between some of his friends belonging to the business community that their entrance should be completely banned, till one
day that he fell sick.
He was removed to the hospital by his family where he was diagnosed to be suffering from severe anemia. His condition was serious and the doctors told the family to arrange blood to be transfused.
He was blood grouped and it was found that he had the rarest blood group, AB negative, whose donors were hard to find. Thus an advertisement was place in the papers for finding suitable donors.
Blood was finally arranged and transfused. After some days he was well and resumed his day to day activities as usual. One day he went to Kali temple and as usual he rebuked the beggar who annoyed him the most as he was in his way. To this, the beggar retorted back saying that, “Sir, I beg to say that, you have the same blood flowing in your veins as mine, so what’s the
difference between you and me”.
Rajan was taken aback and didn’t know what to say as he had a deep sense of humiliation and a feeling of guilt.
