Lost Family Values

Article Summary by: dhawanbm

Original Author: Dhawanbm

Problems with children have started increasing with each passing day. In the earlier years such problems were not as complex

as they are today.

In the good olden times people used to have joint families and large families lived together, under headship of a family elder who used to be a guiding force then.

The expenses were minimal and one used to feel secure from all kinds of troubles. The younger generation was demanding at that time too. A newly married couple preferred to have a separate room for themselves, and were probably given one until the next marriage took place in the family.

As soon as the newly married couple arrived from the ceremony, the elder women shifted the previous couple out to some commonly shared hall and thus they lost all their independence.

Thus the younger generation cribbed at losing their independence and privacy where as the older generation about the generation gap and the loss of family values and rich traditions and culture.

Living under the same roof and the two generations tried to resolve their issues, without bothering about the outside world. But there were too many expenses to meet and the earnings were meager but somehow they managed to make two square meals and all the same survived the expenses of marriages and other ceremonies in the family.

There was a difference in life style of two generations that they led. I here take for instance my grandfather, who lived and has had tasted the kind of life in a joint family. But he had nothing to crib about and he and his brothers lived in perfect harmony that existed between generations. According to him people were not as independent as they are today.

The change in times has given too much liberty and forwardness to the present generation. In today’s era there are more of nuclear families and there is enough economic freedom to each single individual so that every one lives his life according to his own sweet will.

Most of the young couples are ambitious and want a fast forward life. Both husband and wife are working and earn enough money yet there is no contentment as they yearn to earn more and more! There lives are devoid of the family pleasures which the olden people used to derive out of small things and family gatherings. They go for the material pleasures and find solace in achieving them.

Affection, humility and understanding are missing and are fast being forgotten in this materialistic world by the present day generation. Perhaps these are the basic constituents required to regain the lost family values.
