Lily’s father goes off to fight with his country against the Germans and the little girl has to look after the farm with
her old grandfather and her anxious mother. Then their town is to be used as a war practise site so they have to move away to stay with some relatives. They take all of their belongings except Lily’s dear cat Adolphus Tips. When she tries to sneak back, she meets two American soldiers who promise to look after the cat. The readers will be able to experience all the troubles and worries that Lily, who loves her cat, and her family have. These fears include losing her father in war which is the most important to them alongside their grandfather not leaving their home and town which will be used as a war practise site. In the end Lily grows up to be a lady who drives round on a motorbike.
