Franny K. Stein, Mad Scientist: The Fran That Time Forgot

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: Jim Benton
Never, EVER, make a mad scientist angry - even when she creates creepy projects for the school Science Fair, like Porcupine
Underpants, or a Tornado in a Jar, or the ever-so-unpopular Sugar Frosted Snakes. Franny K. Stein’s teacher, Miss Shelly, her school principal, and her classmates have always taken Franny’s creations very seriously…until the principal announces the winner of the Science Fair and reveals Franny’s embarrassing middle name, “Kissypie.” Everyone can’t help but crack up. Bad mistake! According to this mini mad scientist, “There is nothing worse than being laughed at.” And when Franny gets angry, Franny gets even! She plans to use her prize-winning Time Warp Dessert Plate to go back in time and change her hideous middle name to “Kaboom.” Then she takes a peek into her frightening future at Teen Franny, who is more evil and more destructive than she ever was. Benton cleverly weaves humor and a whole lot of gruesomeness to get his point across. “I didn’t have to change my name,” Franny finally realizes. “I had to change how I felt about people laughing at it.” This is book #4 of the horribly popular chapter book series by writer and cartoonist Jim Benton.
