One Dark and Scary Night

Book Review by: MichelleB

Original Author: Bill Cosby
“It happened late one night…one dark and scary night.” A strange light moves across the wall. A spooky sound thumps across
the ceiling. Suddenly something moves inside the bedroom closet! Little Bill is an African-American boy with a wild imagination that transforms ordinary daytime things into scary sights and sounds at night. As many children do, Little Bill runs to his parent’s bedroom for comfort. His mom applies logic (“No things are in the closet.”). His dad grumbles at him (“The only mean thing in this house is me when I don’t get my sleep!”). Fortunately Little Bill’s great-grandmother Alice the Great, who was sleeping down the hall, shows comes up with a “special” way to keep him safe from his imaginary fears by fixing the covers on his bed. In the Forward letter, Dr. Alvin F. Poussaint, Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at Harvard Medical School, offers additional suggestions on how to handle childhood nightmares and bedtime fears. A funny book for beginning readers.
