Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets is the second book in the Harry Potter series. The first book, Harry Potter
and the Philosopher’s Stone introduced the hero and followed his progress as he discovered he was a wizard and spent his first year at Hogwarts, the boarding school for children with magical powers. This book focuses on Harry’s second year.It is a year which gets off to a bad start as Harry and his friend Ron miss the train to the school and get themselves into serious trouble by flying a magical car to Hogwarts; a journey which ends badly when they crash into a very angry tree outside the school. However, soon he, Ron and Hermione are all back together and enjoying life at Hogwarts, with its classes in Potions and Defence Against the Dark Arts; with its Quiditch matches and inter-house rivalries; its ghosts and dark passageways. However, this is Hogwarts, and things do not go smoothly for long. Pupils are being attacked and turned into statues. Investigating, the trio discover the legend of the
Chamber of Secrets. Somewhere in the school lies a chamber; a chamber which contains an evil
monster intent on destroying those not of pure wizard blood – the Muggles, students at the school whose parents were ordinary folk. Somehow the monster has been awakened and this fast-moving novel follows Harry’s attempts, and eventual triumph, in locating and defeating the monster.Like all the Harry Potter novels, this is a wonderful read. J. K. Rowling brings to life a wonderful, magical world. This is a world populated by marvellous characters such as Gilderoy Lockhart, the dashingly handsome Defence Against the Dark Arts teacher, and Moaning Myrtle, the ghost who haunts the girls’ toilet. There is not a page in this book that does not have something to delight the reader and draw him or her into a world of Cornish Pixies, giant spiders and elves.
