The Cat in the Hat is another in the beginner reader series
written by Dr. Seuss. The book’s logo includes the sentence,
“I can read it all by myself”. This is part of the magic of the Dr. Seuss books. These are substantial pieces of work – complete books, in other words – that are
written in such a way that early
readers can read them and thus gain confidence in their reading abilities. The language used is simple and the book keeps to simple, everyday words within the young readers’ experience. The story is written in verse and, like other Dr. Seuss books, very humorous. All these factors combine to create a work which the reader can part read, part remember – thus, enabling them to read with a certain fluency, as opposed to struggling through the text. The layout of the book is also appealing for the young reader. The word count is limited to about 45 words per page and every page is accompanied by attractive artwork that helps explain the text. This, like the other books in the series, is a book I would strongly recommend to the carers of young children.
