Bambi

Book Review by: sanddune

Original Author: Felix Salten

(1929)
Bambi is a simple poetic tale of life in the woods.  The animals act, talk, think and feel like human
beings.  The story has a folk quality and is full of rapture for the mysterious beauty of forest life; it progresses at a quiet pace.  The hero is Bambi, and his destiny is traced from tiny fawn to mature stag.  He has relations, friends and acquaintances.  There are Bambi''s loving mother, his cousin Ava, and her two little fawns Gobo and Faline. Then there are Prince Ronno and Karus the young deer; also Bambi''s friends, the hare, the squirrel, the old stag, the woodpecker, the screech-owl, the magpie, the crow, the doe Marena, and the wicked fox who meets his just end from He.  Now He is the only human  in the forest.  He is diabolically clever and seems to be everywhere.  With a liitle stick in his hand that makes a loud report, he deals death.  He kills young Gobo that way.  Toward the end of the story, he even shoots Bambi in the leg.  But the young stag recovers, falls in love with Faline, marries her and has children by her.
Bambi originally  published in 1929 in German, has become a favorite with the children in many countries; the book has been immortalized again by the animated cartoons of Walt Disney.
