Harry
potter and the
philosophers stone is the first book in the widely aclaimed
Harry potter series written by British J k Rowling. This first installment spans from our hero, Harry''s discovery of the magical world and his place in it to his many adventures throughout his first year at the wizarding school Hogworts. Through the character harry and his relationships with other characters in the book Rowling is able to adress a variety of
themes from prejudice to comradship and
good and evil. throughout the series the battle between good and
evil is the dominant theme and in this first book Rowling sets the grounding for this by the books individual story that fits into the story of the series as a whole. In the philosophers stone we see Harry and his friends Ron and hermione having to fight the character Voldemort to retrieve the philosophers stone which gives the holder eternal life and turns any metal to gold. However we can also see the battle with temptation that Harry faces of the easy path which the Philosophers stone represents. Through the contrast of the characters Harry and Voldemort Rowling demonstrates good and evil and how it is our choices that our nature is derived from not just fate and destiny. Through the characters of Snape and Quirell she also adresses the idea of appearances being decieving and through hermione she shows it''s what we make ourselves that counts not what we''re born. Overall this particular Harry Potter book demonstrates the overall themes of the series as a whole but still contains an individual event and gives it a solution. this means that the books can still be read individually but are able to fit into the series in its entirety. Though Harry potter is classed to be a childrens series it is one that is loved by everyone all round demonstrating complicated themes and plots below the surface so that it can be enjoyed on a wide range of levels. i highly advice this book and in deed the rest of the series for all ages.
