The Classic 'Emma' was written by an English woman called
Jane Austen, who was born in Hampshire in 1775. The young Jane was educated at
a ladies boarding school in Berkshire in 1785
to 1786. In 1789 the young teen began her writing; little did this young
Jane know that one day the novels she would write in her short life would one
day be taught at universities throughout the world.
Between 1811 and 1818 she published 6 novels including 'Emma' which was
published in 1815, many of her novels where published anonymously because of
the way female authors where thought of at that time. Jane began to suffer from
ill-health in 1816 her condition worsened and in 1817 she died and was buried
in Winchester Cathedral.
'Emma' is a the humorous story of a rich single twenty one year old English
woman called Emma Woodhouse, who lives with her aging father and sees herself
as a bit of a matchmaker. The story take us on a comical journey of
Emma's antics and actions as she tries to find a husband for her newest
acquired friend Harriet Smith, whom she take under her wing. In reality
Emma has no real matchmaking skills and misinterprets all the words and
actions of the gentlemen that she tries to match Harriet with.
Then there is Mr. Knightly whose brother is married to Emma's sister, she
considers him to be a friend that is until other female characters begin to
show interest and she realizes her feelings for him are more than friendship
and then she goes into panic mode, for fear she might lose the man she loves.
This is a romantic comedy about a matchmaker that without meaning to messes up
the love life of those around her, can it all be fixed and will she get her
