"White Fang" begins with a dog disguised as a she-wolf; she knows how to lure away sled dogs and sit for fish. Eventually
the wolves retire the traveling men and their dogs, leaving one man to die. The wolves travel far and wide before breaking into mating pairs. The she-wolf manages to secure three mates for herself, but they kill each other until only One Eye remains.
She has pups. One Eye is
killed by a lynx and all the other pups disappear or die. The she-wolf and White Fang are the only two left. They barely manage to fight off the lynx. Later the two return to the Native tribe that the she-wolf came from. Here White Fang learns to remain with the humans and to do as they wish. He is sold off for booze to a conniving man in a small port town. This man beats White Fang and turns him into a
fighting machine, "The Fighting Wolf."
White Fang is lucky. Just before he is killed by a bulldog in a fight, a man rescues him. This man teaches him love for the first time. The family refuses to accept White Fang as anything but a wolf until he saves the man''s life.
Overall, the wolf-dog develops greatly through the book. There are many parallels the reader can draw to real life. This book is a great read.
