This novel about Janie’s adventures.
She marries a man not
meant for her, only to run
away with another
man not meant for her. Janie
finds herself running away from a
tiresome house to a boring one. She is to do nothing but be the
mayor’s wife in the growing all black town, Eatonville. This
relationship is not to her liking either.
Finally, someone her style
comes along
– Tea Cake. She runs away with him to start another life. She finds
out he is not perfect either, but loves him so. Just when things are
getting good, along comes a hurricane. Tea Cake gets bitten by a
rabid dog and she must kill him to defend herself. Janie then returns
to her best friend to tell this story.
